Allow me to introduce you to Nathan! Nathan is a 27-year-old personal trainer and track coach whose life revolves around movement, discipline, and growth. Outside of work, he enjoys listening to music, cooking, hiking, attending concerts, and working out. Fitness has always been a major part of who he is, but after a life-altering accident in 2019, it became a foundation for rebuilding his life. His story of resilience is an inspiration to the Jameson Prosthetics team. Check it out:
Nathan’s Amputation Journey
In 2019, Nathan was involved in a boating accident that caused severe damage to his left leg. Due to the extent of his injuries, an above-the-knee amputation was necessary. His future suddenly looked very different from the life he had once imagined for himself.
In the early days following the accident, Nathan struggled with uncertainty and fear about what life would look like moving forward. He found himself questioning his ability to pursue a career after completing college, even things he knew he had no interest in doing in the first place before his amputation. His mind was telling him he couldn’t.
Through this season, Nathan recalls: “Everything was derailed and I was very lost for some time. What helped was having an outlet like fitness to give myself a goal and setting the bars high to get back to normalcy of life.”
Fitness became a way for him to reclaim control and work toward the independence he so strongly desired. With the support of family and friends, and a strong internal drive to shape his own future, he began to redefine what life could truly look like after amputation.
Early Challenges and Acceptance
One of the biggest challenges that Nathan faced after returning home was trying to live exactly as he had before his accident. He initially struggled to accept that his reality had been permanently changed. “It took a dark moment to really realize that I needed to accept my “new” life and build it into something of success, not a sad story,” he said.
That turning point forced Nathan to confront his new reality and accept that success would require adaptation. Instead of allowing his experience to become a story of loss, he chose to build a life defined by resilience, effort, and growth.
Receiving a Prosthesis
“Getting into a prosthesis was exciting but I felt very nervous,” Nathan replied.
After spending 40 days in the hospital, losing his leg, and fighting to regain independence at home, Nathan faced yet another challenge: relearning how to walk.
When I asked Nathan about how we have supported him throughout his journey, he said: “The team at Jameson Prosthetics are the exact people you want in your corner. The communication, determination to find a way and knowledge provided such a smooth process. They have delivered every time I stepped through the door and have given the best care.” At Jameson Prosthetics, it is always a joy working with patients like Nathan – always having a smile on their face and being ready to accept a new challenge.
Life Today
In Nathan’s case, there was no single defining moment when everything suddenly felt normal again. Instead, progress came in a series of smaller milestones – walking through his home, navigating parking lots, and standing for extended periods of time. Each of these moments contributed to his growing confidence and independence over time.
Today, Nathan’s prosthesis allows him to maintain an active and demanding career. As a personal trainer and track coach, his work requires constant movement and physical demonstration. While there are limitations, they rarely interfere with his ability to engage with clients or perform his role effectively.
Nathan wears his prosthesis for almost 17 hours each day. While there are moments of discomfort, it enables him to move, work, and navigate his daily routine with confidence and independence.
Advice for Others Beginning Their Journey
For those just beginning their prosthetic journey, Nathan emphasizes the importance of resilience and optimism. There will be moments of discomfort or discouragement, but how you respond in those moments can have a lasting impact that extends far more than you can imagine. Maintaining perspective and choosing to approach challenge with determination can make all the difference.
When asked about what he wished he knew at the start of his journey, Nathan’s reply was: “Talk to your prosthetist about everything. They want you to be as comfortable as possible so let them know anything that is happening with your prosthesis…”
